Erisco Foods Shuts Down Nigeria’s Factory, Relocates To China

Erisco Foods Limited has announced the shutdown of its tomato manufacturing business in Nigeria citing an unfavourable operating climate which has escalated operational costs in recent months. President/CEO of Erisco Foods Limited, Chief Eric Umeofia, who addressed a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday said the company had concluded plans to relocate the manufacturing aspect of the business to China from where finished products would be imported and sold to consumers in Nigeria and other parts of the world.  According to him, the decision to shut down the Nigerian manufacturing plant was taken after the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum given by the management of the company to the Federal Government to compel the CBN to make available enough foreign exchange (forex) to assist in the imports of raw materials as well as the requisite equipment needed to keep the manufacturing plants running and also profitable.  The company had also demanded that the Federal Government compe...

A Nigerian, Esther Ruby Daniel studying Amity University, Haryana, India has broken a sports record in the University. The 17-year-old who is a 200 level student in the institution in her first month in the School won a silver medal during All Indian student University games this year. Esther who is from Akwa Ibom state has also won a gold medal in 200 meters and silver medal in long jump on 5th and 6th October respectively. On 14th October, she won another Gold in 100 meters race and a golden cup in her final game. She also won a bronze medal for the university during the 100 meters race with other universities. According to her father, Rev Daniel Thomas, who issued a statement he said his daughter is now a pride to Amity University, Nigeria and Africa. Banks’ Profits Rise Despite Recession

Banks have defied the recession as they continued to post huge profits in their third quarter results. Ten out of 15 quoted banks on the Nigerian Stock Exchange have submitted their unaudited results as of September 2016 where five out of them recorded increases in both their profit before tax and after tax. Within the last quarter under review, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had declared that the Nigerian economy had entered into recession. However some banks have gained huge profits following a major boost from the foreign exchange (FX) revaluation gains. Five out of the 10 banks that declared results so far reported significant gains while the remaining five recorded decline in profits. Collectively, the 10 banks recorded N488.96 billion pre-tax profit as of September 30, from N433.7 billion within the same period in 2015. This shows a N55.26 billion increase. The after tax profit recorded within the period was N484.13bn compared to N357.59bn same period in 2015,...
