The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has advised parents not to endanger the lives of their children and wards by allowing them to resume in various universities across the country.

ASUU also advised members not to sign the attendance registers in their institutions and lambasted the government for lack of consistency in its statements on  the ongoing strike.The union warned that academic activities would not commence until the Federal Government perfected the resolutions reached with the union. Dr Segun Ajiboye, Chairman of University of Ibadan chapter, said “ Don’t risk the lives of your children, keep them at home because ASUU will not teach. Soldiers and the police deployed by the Federal Government will not teach. "Wike can come and teach in the universities. It is a huge joke to sack lecturers. Our strike must not be in vain. Our students must see the results. “It is funny. We thought we are in a democracy. I assure Nigerians that we know what the law says about the strike. Our job is statue backed. We are not threatened. We do not trust the government. The record of the government is clear. This government is dishonouring agreements....

Breaking News: ASUU Vows to Go On with the Strike

The Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have vowed to continue with the ongoing strike until the Federal Government meets all of its demands. In a press briefing which started in Abuja in the afternoon of December 2, 2013, the President of ASUU, Nasir Fagge, declared the union “shall never be cowed.” “We shall bow only to what we as academics are convinced will serve the interest of Nigeria and its people, no matter their ethnic, religious or class origins. This is where we stand. We shall never be cowed,” the leader of ASUU said. More to follow…

ASUU LATEST: Presidency Blasts ASUU

The Federal Government said at the weekend that its decision to sack the striking lecturers was informed by the stance of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to get its demand in one fell swoop. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, told reporters in Abuja that it was wrong “for a party to a dispute to come to the table with an “all or none” mentality”. The accident also caused significant damage. This could also mean a delay in delivering all 12 venues of the Itaquerao Stadium, which was 94 percent completed, by FIFA's December deadline. The story continues below A huge metal structure appears to be buckled atop the stadium. It reportedly destroyed part of the stands in the east side of the venue, and an LED panel installed outside the venue also was hit. University Of Abuja To Re-Open December 1.

After the Federal Government issued this morning the directive ordering all Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities to re-open their universities for academic activities, the management of the University of Abuja has directed its students to resume academic activities on Sunday, the 1st of December. The statement was this morning signed by the University registrar. Telephone calls to the university’s ASUU chairman Dr. Clement Chup to react to the directive was not answered.

BREAKING: ASUU May Suspend Strike Once Resolutions Reached With Jonathan Accepted

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said they would suspend strike within 24 hours once the resolutions reached with President Goodluck Jonathan on November 4 were accepted. The Union, however, described the  statement  credited to Supervising Minister and Minister of Education, Barr Nyesom Wike,  that ASUU was making new outrageous demands as "untrue and absolute lie". ASUU’s position was made known by the National Treasurer,  Dr. Ademola Aremu,  in an interview with  The Nation  in Ibadan on Wednesday. The Union said it asked Jonathan to facilitate the endorsement of resolutions reached with him and signed by high ranking government official preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation but not a Permanent Secretary. Today the Federal Government gave the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), one week ultimatum to call off the lingering lecturers' strike. The acting Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja. It was gathered  that the government has also ordered Vice Chancellors of Universities to declare the jobs of the striking lecturers vacant as from Wednesday, December 4. Wike called the ongoing varsity teachers’ strike as “act of sabotage.” “The continuation of the strike despite several meetings, especially with President Goodluck Jonathan is an attempt by the union to sabotage all efforts by government to address the issue,"  he said.
