Fire Guts Visafone Office In Lagos (Photo)

3 July, 2013 Local       Hell seemed let lose, Tuesday at Saka Tinubu, Victoria Island, Lagos, when fire broke out at the national sales office of Visafone Communications Limited. No life was lost, recharge cards and equipment, said to be worth millions of naira, were lost to the fire which lasted for hours. Although the cause of the fire could not be ascertained, firefighters told newsmen that the fire began on the ground floor of the building. The fire was said to have started from the vault, where recharge cards are stored. Director, Lagos State Fire and Safety Service, Razaq Fadipe, was quoted as saying that over 50,000 litres of water was used in putting out the fire, yet it proved difficult to put out because of the peculiarity of the building. According to him, “There was fire outbreak around 12.56pm at 33 Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, which is where the national sales office of Visafone is located. Residents Groan Under The New Transport Scheme

4 July, 2013 Local       The new scheme for public transport services introduced by the Federal Capital Territory Administration to cater for the daily influx of people into Abuja does not seem to have achieved the desired goals.  The scheme was designed to improve transportation in the city so as to enable commuters to get to their destinations safely and in good time. Also, it was meant to boost transportation on feeder roads and to check traffic jams on high capacity bus routes. Needless to say that the policy led to the banning of commercial mini-buses, popularly known as Araba, from operating in Abuja and its environs. Under the scheme, government has granted operating licenses to  five mass transit operators who will ply designated routes in the capital city with high capacity buses. Kogi Promises N175m to Students Across the Country

4 July, 2013 Education       Kogi state Governor Idris Wada has announced that the local government will disburse up to N175.4 million scholarship to over 46 thousand students of 109 teaching institutions across the country. Wada stated this while receiving members of the state Scholarship Board led by its chairman, Dr. Rekiya Momoh-Abaji. The Governor asked the board to ensure that genuine students get the bursary allowance. He also promised that the government would address the various problems confronting the board, as earlier Dr. Momoh-Abaji in her address admitted the board requires another N 8,450.000 for travel allowances and expenses.

3 July, 2013 Football Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel says he does not know if he will be at at the club next season. The Nigeria international is on an extended break after competing in the Confederations Cup but was noncommittal when questioned about his Stamford Bridge future. CHAOS: Senators Go Violent Over Jonathan’s State Of The Nation Address

3 July, 2013 Politics The Nigerian Senate relived a brief moment of its chaotic past ,Wednesday, after two members targeted each other at an irate session over a proposed law compelling the president to deliver a state of the nation address yearly. Kabiru Garba Marfa, who represents Zamfara State, and Paulinus Igwe, a Senator from Ebonyi State, set out for fisticuffs before they were separated by several other senators who had deliberated the law for hours without a decision. The legislation, approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives, has been rejected by President Goodluck Jonathan who has raised concerns with several aspects of the bill. As passed, the bill will make it mandatory for Mr. Jonathan and future presidents to present State of the Nation address on the first legislative day of every July before a joint sitting of the National Assembly. Also, both chambers will have the right to summon the president if he fails to appear in person on the date.

4 July, 2013 Local Academic activities at the University of Lagos were grounded on Tuesday in compliance with the national strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday. The  ASUU, under the leadership of the National President, Dr Isa Fagge, had directed members of the union to embark on an indefinite strike nationwide. Fagge said that the action followed the inability of the Federal Government to implement some of the issues contained in a 2009 agreement it had with the union. He told newsmen in Lagos that the government had also reneged on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it entered into with the union in December 2011. At University of Lagos to monitor the effect of the strike, reports that there was total compliance as lecturers shunned classes. SHOCKING: Chaos As Robbers Escape Court After Death Sentence: Judge Runs For Dear Life

2 July, 2013 Local Tweet       It was a chaotic scene on Monday at the Asaba High Court In Delta, when two armed0robbers escaped from the court immediately the judge sentenced them to death. The men, who were found guilty of conspiracy and armed robbery were eventually re-arrested by two prison guards. According to some court officials, immediately the judge announced the sentence, one of them, known as Elvis Agbofodo escaped and ran into a nearby church where the prison guard found him and shot him in the leg to keep him immobilized. The other convict, Frank Okedema, ran in a different direction before he was apprehended by another prison guard with the aid of residents of the area. Court proceedings were reportedly disrupted by the escape attempt as this caused the prison guards to start shooting sporadically. The judge, court officials, lawyers and other persons in the area ran for their lives to avoid being hit by flying bullets.
