Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has said electricity generation was stepping up as its output on Wednesday “significantly” increased to 4,000 megawatts, an assurance of improved power supply. The Assistant General Manager of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), a subsidiary of PHCN, Dave Ifabiyi, told journalists on Wednesday in Lagos that earlier drop in generation was due to ongoing maintenance on installations.
“Power generation which dropped due to system collapse has improved to over 4,000 megawatts as at Wednesday. We hope that before the week runs out the generation will reach a peak of 4,600 megawatts,” he said.
Ifabiyi said the current generation level will increase when all the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) were fully integrated into the national grid.
He attributed the recent increase in power generation to government’s commitment to the privatisation of the sector as well as the commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan to fulfill his promise of improved electricity supply.
The TCN boss said that transmission and distribution companies would continue to harness as more National Integrated Power Projects became functional.
He appealed to energy consumers to continue to partner with TCN in protecting electricity installations and forestall vandalism, which constituted a major setback to efforts to improve supplies.
