IGP Arase Says Police Will Build Its Checkpoints
Despite the order from President Muhammudu Buhari
calling for the removal of military checkpoints in the country, the
inspector general of police, Solomon Arase, says the police can still
create checkpoints.
The IGP says checkpoints could be built in cases where intelligence suggests the need to lock the highways.
Arase says the police force will continue to provide security despite the dismantling of military checkpoints in the country.
Arase was speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja just before a closed door meeting with senior police officers.
The IGP also assured Nigerians of continuous collaborations with the military and the Department of State Services (DSS) to provide security as stipulated by the constitution, adding that roadblocks will be created for stop and search if intelligence suggests they should.
Nigerian Pilot quotes him saying:“The president has given a directive that our colleagues in the military should withdraw from some of the areas that they were mounting road blocks. The withdrawal of soldiers should not create any fear in the mind of Nigerians, we have done it before and we are going to do it again,” he said.
On the need for the closed door meeting, Arase said ways to fill the void created by the military withdrawal as well as strategies to ensure proper internal security will be discussed.

According to Arase, 555 patrol vehicles have been deployed to secure highways across the country as Nigerians would not want excuses for failures.
He continued: “We have opportunity now and this is a nice opportunity for us to take over our mandate of providing internal security.”
On cultism and kidnappings in Edo, Ekiti and Kogi states, Arase said that all those arrested have been charged by the police and are awaiting trial.
The IGP asked all state police commissioners to takea huge interest in tackling crimes in their respective states as he would not want the police headquarters to always intervene to tackle crimes. It should, however, be noted that President Buhari has not called for the demolition of checkpoints in all the states of the nation.
According to the governor of Zamfara state and chairman of the Governors’ Forum, Abdulazeez Yari, Buhari ordered the return of military checkpoints in frontier states battling Boko Haram insurgents.
According to the governor, Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states will still mount military checkpoints.
