Nigerians React To Obasanjo's Statement On Biafra

A recent statement by former president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has drawn harsh criticisms from citizens of Southeastern Nigeria.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo drew a parallel between the Biafran war and the fight against Boko Haram, this comparison did not go down well with many Nigerians, especially those from the Southeast.
The statement which is beginning to cause agitations among the masses was made by Obasanjo following a briefing made to President Muhammadu Buhari on his delegation’s mission to study Columbia’s effort in the war against the separatist group- FARC.
In his statement, the ex-military ruler said Nigeria will win the war against Boko Haram the same way the nation defeated Biafra secessionist during the civil war that lasted between 1967 and 1970, a statement that tends to have opened old wounds and brought back bitter memories of Biafra and the killings at Odi in Bayelsa state.

Here are reactions which the statement has drawn as many Nigerians took to socio-media to share their views on the rather ill-drawn parallel.
See reactions from Facebook
Esuo Azaino: “Haba! The two situations are different, Biafrans were never terrorist so why is this old man making comparison, in fact Biafra will legally and peacefully break away from Nigeria.”
Ekekwe Godwin Anosike:  “I can’t be provoked because I’ve been provoked by Radio Biafra, I am just waiting for my director- Nnamdi Kanu’s command, we can’t lose Biafra never in life. One love my people of the land of risen sun Biafra !”
Jon Sampson: “look at a coward that was found under the bed of a woman when he heard about the death of murtala mohammed.”
Kalu Alexandra Felix:  “To obasanjo he defeated Biafra, unknown to him, he made Biafra (d land of d rising sun) stronger.I have got no case wit obj because he just affirmed that he has got nothing in his think-tank, but to anyone in that supports the statement of an unfortunate statesman of the federal republic of northern and western(nigeria) …..they should continue and watch Biafra rise to the apex of d pyramid.”
Iyke Iykomo: “Obasanjo the ugly evil and corrupt man on earth who out of his greedy nature want to be president forever by wasting our money on third term bid to remain forever as most ugly wicked president and killer of Odi people in Bayelsa.”

Immaculate Osimach: This old ape is bent on making nigeria futureless, who defeated Biafra? Is it Nigeria or a combined forces of Russia, America, Britain, France and Nigeria? But the single region Biafra still held 5 countries down for 3yrs. This ape should be ashamed of himself. How many trips have Buhari made to the us govt and what has he returned with? Defeat boko haram on social media while they are defeating the armies and killing innocent citizens in reality. You think Boko Haram is Odi masscre u carried out in Bayelsa and went scot-free?”
Ken Oz:There is nothing much at stake in the fight against Boko Haram compared to the civil war. In the civil war, oil and the survival of the nation were the key factors which attracted foreign support. Obj need to think well before making his often bogus and unrealistic statements. Boko Haram would be defeated the moment a gold mine is discovered in the North East. Please stop deceiving Nigerians with fake patriotism, we know you are all thieves and do not mean well for Nigeria and Nigerians.”
Alawiye Musodiq: “Please,My Country men, let us stop drumming the war of words and actions resulting in a divided Country. It pays nobody to start another war now. Are we not watching what is happening in Libya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan etc.
Orchestrating the Biafra Republic or whatever is like engulfing a completed fine house with well equipped fitness with fire!
Left for Baba Obasanjo, I don’t foresee anybody who can change him, Only God Almighty can. I agree with you all that he is an architect of our many woes in Nigeria, but let us be prayerful to Allah to direct our leaders especially, PMB to lead us to the right part. Because, it is only the guidance of God that help Nigeria now”

Bimbo Jaiyeola: “I don’t think this is a fair statement by Obasanjo. We need peace in Nigeria, not provocation. Boko haram are terrorists, Igbos are not. What is Obasanjo up to?”

The statement by Obasanjo which triggered an all out media outburst also brought to the fore incidents which were long thought forgotten.

One of such issues was the military invasion of the predominantly Ijaw town of Odi (massacre of Odi) in Bayelsa state, which took place on Saturday, November 20, 1999.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian civil war popularly known as the ‘Biafran war’ which lasted between 1967 and 1970, recorded about two million civilians deaths from famine and fighting.
